TRA LA! IT'S MAY! THE LUSTY MONTH OF MAY!
"WHEN ALL THE WORLD IS BRIMMING WITH FUN, WHOLESOME... OR UN!" ~ Julie Andrews in CAMELOT on Broadway, 1960.
Isn’t it a joyful thing to look outside in the month of May? I love the flowers of May because they just pop up all by themselves, wherever they happen to get planted. Although I admire and envy a carefully planned garden, I’m more inspired by the single brave tulip that pops up on the edge of a woods where the weeds rule; or a clump of daffodils holding their own in a planting bed overtaken by goutweed. Who would allow their beds to be overtaken by goutweed you say? Ahem!
The Little Church with the Big Heart managed to bump along without Lauri for a couple of weeks in April. She will be away from time to time over the next year, completing her studies. While she was away, we welcomed Scott McLeod to the pulpit. He spoke about emulating Jesus by engaging in acts of service. The following week, in honour of Earth Day, Teresa Van Rees reminded us of all the little ways we can reduce our carbon footprint to preserve this beautiful planet we call home.
“What a lonely place it would be to have a world without a wildflower!” ~ Roland Kemler
Speaking of Lauri being away, she’ll be representing Kilworth church at the Tri-Regional Spring Meeting in Port Elgin at the end of May. The theme of the weekend is “Life Together”, and the Right Reverend Dr. Carmen Lansdowne will be the guest speaker. Lauri will be exploding with new ideas and plans when she returns! Reverend Anne Beattie-Stokes will be conducting our service on May 26th.
There will also be a large number of ministers commissioned and ordained that weekend as the United Church of Canada moves to a two-orders format, giving designated lay ministers the opportunity to choose between ordained and commissioned calls.
Chuck and Chip’s afternoon movie/fundraiser was a huge success! Everyone received free popcorn at the door, and Jack’s hotdogs at the intermission were a big hit. And we raised $678.00! Proceeds were divided 50/50 between Kilworth Church and Oneida Nation of the Thames or, as they are known within the Haudenosaunee Confederacy, Onyota’a:ka, People of the Standing Stone.
On Band Sunday we were blessed with Shelly Faris’s vocals again, and Lauri was back! It was a great day, with lots of laughter, singing, and camaraderie. Welcome back, Lauri!
